Abstract

An existing one-dimensional, non-linear, degrading stress-strain soil model for horizontal sites is extended to mildly sloping sites and a practical procedure to analyze the earthquake-induced deformation of mildly sloping soft clayey sites is presented. The proposed soil mode assumes a unique relationship between the degradation index and residual strain and appears to provide satisfactory results when compared to laboratory tests results. An example analysis of a hypothetical mildly sloping site using the computer program DCHARMS is shown to illustrate the application of the procedure. The proposed procedure is similar to the stress path method as applied to the earthquake deformation analysis of an embankment. The procedure, however, assumes the decoupling of the cyclic part and the residual part of the response and incorporates omly the cyclic part of the response in the actual response calculations.
