Abstract

Possible effects of earthquakes on earth dams are outlined and illustrated by descriptions of the performance of the Hebgen Dam in the Hebgen Lake earthquake of 1959, the Sheffield Dam in the Santa Barbara earthquake of 1925 and the San Fernando Dams in the San Fernando earthquake of 9 Feb. 1971. Methods of analyzing the stability of earth dams during earthquakes are reviewed and dynamic analysis procedures for this purpose are illustrated by means of recent studies for specific projects.
