Abstract

This paper presents a new approach for the characterization of an earthing system, which is based on the derivation of its impulse response from a pair of voltage and current curves obtained experimentally. Once the impulse response is obtained, the earthing system response to any arbitrary excitation can be obtained by a convolution operation. The paper briefly presents the theory behind the impulse response derivation and exemplifies its application on three different earthing systems. The calculated responses to arbitrary current waveforms are compared with those obtained experimentally, showing a very good agreement that validates the proposed method.
