Abstract

The Todmorden earthquake gave epicentral intensities in excess of V on the Modified Mercalli Scale for a magnitude Mb ≏ 4.0. The fact that it attracted more attention than the larger event near Kirkby Stephen in 1970 is ascribed to the combination of focal depth, surface geology and population density in the affected area.
