Abstract

After a lifetime as an earth scientist climbing up the rocky slopes of academia, Sir Keith O'Nions has now reached the summit. As the new director-general of the UK's seven research councils, his job is to advise the government on the science budget – how big it should be and how it should be spent. He also has to help make the case to the Treasury for any increases in the science budget. O'Nions took over last month from Sir John Taylor, who stepped down after five years in the post.
