Abstract

Nearly a million and a half students enroll each year in earth science courses in American public and private high schools. Two decades after the rise in popularity of this subject our studies of Iowa teachers indicate the subject is seldom taught by a trained, activity-oriented earth science teacher. Exemplary teachers can be identified and a mechanism must be developed for employing these teachers to re-infuse a spirit of activity-based teaching to this vital field.
