Abstract

With a sizable number of students and researchers from the People's Republic of China now studying the earth sciences in the United States, it is important for educators in the United States to understand the nature of earth sciences education in China. The educational system in China at all levels is dominated by the role of the state. Apparently, for reasons of “efficiency,” a system has developed which forces individuals to make early career decisions when only limited information is available. The majority of earth scientists are trained in the applications-oriented secondary schools and colleges of the technical ministries, a significant number, however, are educated in broader universities with a more theoretical emphasis. Graduate training can be pursued both in China and abroad. Extensive reforms are currently being instituted or considered for all major elements of the educational structure.
