Abstract
In Dark Harbor (1993), Strand’s career evolves to a new level poetically, if not philosophically. Possessing the strength of conviction and finding a need to create a more sustained enterprise in light of such recent masters as Ashbery, Strand felt ready to undertake a more substantial project: I tried to enlarge my vision and write something new, and I think Dark Harbor is an attempt to make an enlargement. I had just come back from Washington being Poet Laureate and had no place to work. It was a very social year, and I wrote “Suite of Appearances” (in consideration of the social obligations I had had to make). John Ashbery’s Flow Chart had just appeared and I had always thought he was a great poet of the generation just ahead of me. [Inspired by Flow Chart] I felt I needed to write a long poem.… So, with “Auroras of Autumn” [in mind], I wanted to engage in an exercise in good spirits. (Interview, Jan. 26, 2002)
