Radialvelocities, rotation indices, and line-strength indices for southern candidates. Stetson, P. B. Abstract Radial velocities, rotation indices, and metal-line strength indices have been derived from spectra of 124 southern early-type stars possibly having large space motions, for three optical companions to high-velocity candidates, and for 28 comparison stars. The internal repeatability of these radial velocities ranges from about 1.2 km/s per observation for sharp-lined F stars to about 10 km/s for rapidly rotating A stars; the external error of the velocities is estimated to be less than 2-3 km/s. A rough calibration of the rotation indices yields (v sin i)'s with an accuracy estimated at 5-7 km/s or 15 %. Radial velocities accurate to ∼10 km/s are obtained for an additional 19 comparison stars, six program stars, and one companion to a program star. A list is given of 45 high-velocity candidates confirmed to be main-sequence stars of spectral types earlier than ∼F1, for which radial velocities are now available. When this sample is divided into high- and low-velocity subgroups on the basis of their transverse velocities, their radial-velocity distributions are also found to be different: the radial-velocity dispersion is 57 km/s for the stars with larger transverse velocities, and 21 km/s for stars with smaller transverse velocities. This evidence strongly favors the existence of main-sequence A stars with abnormally large space motions. There appear to be several binary stars in the high-velocity sample, which will be important for determining the origin of these stars.
