Abstract

Abstract The tissue compatibility of gutta‐percha or gutta‐percha coated with 6 different root canal sealers was evaluated. A modified implantation technique, permitting short‐term observations, was used. A total of 207 implants were placed in the muscle tissue of rabbits, and the tissue reactions were observed microscopically at. 1, 7, or 14 days after implantation. Gutta‐percha caused a slight tissue reaction at all observation periods. Three different reaction patterns were observed among the sealer implants. Grossman's sealer caused a rather slight initial tissue reaction which increased to a moderate level. Kloroperka N‐Ø and zinc oxide‐eugenol cement maintained a moderate/severe reaction throughout the 14‐d observation period. Diaket and AH26 caused a severe initial reaction which persisted at 7 d and had decreased slightly at 14 d. A similar reaction pattern was seen in the rosin chloroform series, but here the initial tissue reaction receded substantially, and only a slight reaction was observed at 14 d.
