Abstract

In large flowered rose seedlings of the Hybrid Tea type, very significant positive correlations were found between: u the lengths of the seedlings at first flowering and shoot lengths of the same plants on a rootstock (r=0.70), and the juvenile periods of the seedlings and their stem lengths when grafted on a rootstock (r=0.88). In view of a negative correlation found earlier between the juvenile period and the flower production of seedlings, stem length and flower production are opposite characters. It is advocated to select primarily for short juvenile periods and subsequently for long stemmed seedlings, before selecting for flower characters.
