Abstract

Summary Janos/Johann/Jan Rombauer (1782–1849) a portraitist of Eperies (Presov). He painted the portrait of Johann Samuel Steinhubel, a merchant of Eperies in 1804. He is represented in his study reading business letters from abroad. The landscape depicted behind him seems to be an illustrated wallpaper, a panorama of a commercial boat. Another portrait by Rombauer of the same year portrays an unknown young man, whose cultural orientation is expressed by the view of an English garden as well as by a book with the name of Jean Jacques Rousseau on it. It would be worth collecting the works of Rombauer in a comprehensive exhibition of paintings from Poland, from Russia, from Slovakia and Hungary.
