Abstract

To determine the risk factors associated with development of acute cardiac allograft rejection during the first 3 months after transplant, data from 1,552 endomyocardial biopsies from 122 cardiac transplant recipients receiving their first graft were analyzed. An association (P< .0001) between the onset of a first rejection episode and the frequency of rejection episodes in the first 90 days was established. Our findings suggest that patients presenting with an early onset of first cardiac allograft rejection episode are at risk for multiple rejection episodes and should therefore be more closely monitored.
