Abstract

The Papworth Cardiac Transplant program began in 1979. The selection and procurement techniques used for the retrieval of donor hearts was published in the British Medical Journal in 1984. 1 English T.A.H. Spratt P. Wallwork J. Cory-Pearce R. Wheeldon D. During the first 3 years of the program, 61 transplants were performed using donor hearts from 250 referrals. The most common reason for refusal was on medical grounds (26%). However, even with this careful selection, there were 8 early deaths (13%), 3 of which were clearly from primary donor organ failure.
