Abstract
Bile duct injury during cholecystectomy is frequently unrecognized at the time of operation. This series indicates that the reconstruction is usually unsuccessful even when the injury is recognized and repair is attempted at the initial operation. Clinically evident jaundice three to seven days after operation is the most common initial sign of duct injury. External biliary fistula, cholangitis, or subhepatic abscess may also indicate duct damage. Choledochojejunostomy has been the most consistently dependable reconstructive procedure.
