Abstract

SummaryThree charophyte taxa—Raskyella feisti sp. nov., Stephanochara massieuxi sp. nov. and Stephanochara sp. cf. S. rochettiana (HEER)—are recorded from the red beds (Early Lutetian) of the Subathu Formation of Shimla Hills in the Lesser Himalayas. Both these genera are being reported for the first time from India.Biostratigraphically, the charophyte gyrogonites occur in Zone IX of Mathur (1978) and in the Passage Beds (sensu Bhatia and Mathur, 1965). The occurrence of charophytes in these beds along with brackish water foraminirera, ostracoda, mollusca and terrestrial vertebrates supports the contention that they were deposited in a tidal flat environment with periodic influx of freshwater. The assemblage, though new, shows affinities with European Eocene taxa.
