Abstract

A well-preserved stringed botanic-based necklace was unearthed in tomb IM164 of the Yanghai Cemetery (∼1300 BCE-200 CE) in Turpan, Xinjiang, northwest China. The necklace consisted of 171 plant drupes interlaced by cords. Both morphological and anatomical features of the drupes were identified as Nitraria tangutorum. This Nitraria necklace of an ornamental function is the first recovered in Central Asia and discussed in this present study. The necklace indicates the pursuit of beauty and diverse social and cultural activities of the Yanghai inhabitants during the early Iron Age.
