Abstract

Since January 1974 Dutch law has provided that rehabilitation (probation and parole) agencies can provide early assistance for certain suspects held at police stations. This means that the agency intervenes at an early stage in the proceedings and contacts such suspects to see whether they are in need of help. In the remainder of this article, the term “early intervention” will be used to denote the work of the agencies in this respect.
