Abstract

Purpose. The article is devoted to the actual topic of reflection of pagan customs and rituals in traditional Islam culture. The study of problem existing in humanities is rather descriptive. Methodology. We used general scientific methods: analysis and synthesis, comparison, generalization. Results. The author first set the goal of differentiation of the canonical religions and pagan forms in this religion. The analysis of the complex of pagan customs and rituals (the pilgrimage to the mountains, the cult of Saints, graves, and the cult of the dead ancestors, magic) and their comparison with the norms of Islam showed that they were firmly entrenched in this religion. It is shown that at the present stage these remnants continue to influence the ethical, moral norms of the peoples of Dagestan, as they are often perceived as purely canonical norms of Islam. Practical implications. The results of the work will be of interest to the specialists in the field of cultural studies and ethnography.
