Parents of children with autistic spectrum disorders in the United Kingdom were contacted by mail through membership in different support groups. Out of 2,488 questionnaires distributed, there were 1,295 completed responses with an overall return rate of 55.1%. Out of the 1,295 completed questionnaires, 47.4% had been given a clear diagnosis of autism, while 12.0% received an unequivocal diagnosis of Asperger syndrome (repetitive behavior and obsessional, idiosyncratic interests with no marked cognitive or language delay). The remaining 40% had mixed or incomplete diagnoses.1 The diagnostic experiences of the 614 parents of children with autism and the 156 parents of children with Asperger syndrome were reviewed in this paper.
