Abstract

The distribution and composition of carbohydrates were determined for the upper 15 cm of four cores from the southern slope of the Skagerrak. High concentrations were found in the upper bioturbated layers rapidly decreasing at sediment depths > 3 cm. Total contents appear to be controlled by bioturbation. Application of various biomarker criteria suggests that carbohydrates originated from terrestrial, macroalgal and planktonic sources. Input from these sources might be by episodic events rather than by continuous sedimentation as can be hypothesised from the irregular occurrence of marine and terrestrial signals.
