Abstract

This paper presents a low-cost sensor for the early detection of flood in urban catch basins. Blockage and flooding in urban catch basins is caused by accumulation of sediment. This sensor can be installed inside the catch basin for detecting the critical level of sediment. The sensing system is composed of a two-element array of printed circuit board slot lines connected to a data acquisition system via a reading module for real-time monitoring and in-time triggering of the evacuation alarm in a blocked catch basin. The proposed system can reduce the operational costs of water companies by decreasing the incidents of sewer flooding and pollution.
