Abstract

This chapter discusses the influence of Hellenism on Early Judaism and Early Christianity, and the influence of apocalypticism on the Jewish context of Early Christianity. Both research fields have - among many other important ones - defined much of New Testament scholarship during the twentieth century. The chapter makes some critical remarks on scholarship on Early Judaism in general. It then focuses on the two areas of research, first on Judaism and Hellenism and then on Prophecy and Apocalypticism. The chapter discusses the two subfields independently of how they have or may have shaped New Testament Studies, as better informed and more detailed studies relevant for the New Testament and the Early Church can be found elsewhere. Keywords:biblical prophecy; Early Christianity; Early Judaism; Hellenism; Jewish apocalypticism; twentieth century
