Abstract

Summary A comparison is made of the development of amphioxus and ascidians with emphasis on the relation of various stages to the immediate environment and with particular reference to relative and absolute size. Each type exhibits a dual character, combining somatic chordate and visceral filter-feeding systems, although in different ways. Both types are related to the vertebrate chordates but neither can be regarded as directly ancestral to them.
