Abstract

This paper presents an overview of early childhood education in Korea. Five periods of historical development in early childhood education are discussed. In each period, types of early childhood institutions, relevant demographics, curriculum emphasis, national policy and trends in teacher education for early childhood education are explained. By providing some background information and an overview of existing strengths and weaknesses as well as of accomplishments and achievements of the early childhood system, the paper presents the points of departure for further development of the systems of early childhood education in keeping with Korean changing social circumstances.
