Abstract
This paper, presented in two parts, is a review of early charts of exploration and claims of possession by French, Spanish, English and Argentinian settlers prior to the mid-nineteenth century. Part 7 suggests that Portuguese knowledge of a south-west passage to the Pacific existed prior to the “discovery” of a strait by Magellan. The Spanish did not capitalize on this knowledge but after Drake's circumnavigation, several English, Dutch and French voyages produced cartographic record of contact with the Falklands.
