Abstract

The hepatic and plasma free amino acid concentrations have been measured at intervals during the first 4 h after partial hepatectomy in the rat, and 4 h after sham hepatectomy. It has been shown that overall, both hepatic and plasma free amino acid concentrations rise during the first 4 h after partial hepatectomy as compared with control (sham hepatectomy) values. The hepatic and plasma urea concentrations also showed very large increases after partial hepatectomy. It is suggested that the rise in hepatic free amino acid concentrations may be responsible for initiating the subsequent metabolic events in liver regeneration.
