Abstract

The first systematic excavation of a Palestinian tell took place in 1890 when W. M. Flinders Petrie conducted a six-week campaign at Tell el-Hesi. Through his work at this site he distinguished a relative pottery sequence based on stratigraphic levels and established the chronological value of pottery in excavation. His publication of this work (1891) included the first sherd profile drawings and set a precedent followed by virtually all later excavators.
