Abstract

This chapter deals with the fi rst voyage of an English ship to the Luso-Chinese enclave of Macao. Using Portuguese archival material and the East India Company Records (India Offi ce Records, British Library, IOR), I retrace the adventures and analyse the aims of the British crew who travelled aboard the London , a ship chartered by the Portuguese viceroy of Goa to the East India Company, to travel to Macao in 1635, allowing the former to avoid the Dutch blockade. The Macao Portuguese defended their interests and tried to keep the newcomers as far away from the China trade as possible, while the East India Company factors tried to establish direct trade with the Chinese and compete with the Portuguese in Macao.
