Abstract

The antecedents of the degree of emotional responsiveness and reactivity control which characterize the child at successive periods of childhood and adolescence are sought in factors present between birth and age 4. Both the family milieu and the behavior of the very young child are investigated. The results indicate that there is considerable linkage between early factors and the child's later behavior. Different patterns of associations are found for the 2 sexes and at different developmental periods, suggesting that the meaning of the later behaviors varies as a function of developmental stresses and demands characteristic of the time of assessment.
