Abstract

This paper describes a new surface modification for metal molds by Large-area electron Beam (EB polishing). In this study, the structure of the resolidified layer formed on the EB-polished surface is experimentally analyzed. Also, the surface characteristics for long life of metal mold, such as corrosion resistance and water repellency are evaluated. The experimental results made it clear that EB polishing is very effective for surface modification. It is caused by the thin resolidified layer formed on the EB irradiated surface. In this layer, the crystal grain size becomes small and the microstructure changes. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance becomes higher because of the rearrangement of choromium of the matrix.
