Abstract

A macrolayer formation model in saturated and subcooled pool boiling is presented. It is assumed that the spatial distributions of nucleation sites are described by the Poisson distribution. Active nucleation site density is calculated by considering the effect of suppression of bubble generation from potential nucleation sites due to masking by growth of primary bubbles at neighboring sites. The macrolayer is formed by the lateral further coalescence of coalesced bubbles that are formed by coalescence of two primary bubbles. The predicted macrolayer thickness agrees well with the experimental data.
