Abstract

For turbulent natural convection boundary layers in water along vertical flat plates, experimental results except for heat transfer rates, mean temperature and mean velocity have not yet been reported. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether the turbulence characteristics are similar to those obtained for air which have been relatively well examined. In the present study, we have measured turbulence statistics such as mean velocity, velocity fluctuation intensities, Reynolds shear stress in a natural convection boundary layer in water with PIV. As a result, it is found that each profiles are similer to those measured for air and approximately coincide with those obtained from a time-developing direct numerical simulation for water.
