Abstract

The deuteron wavefunction obtained in the coupled channel model of the nucleon-nucleon interaction with Δ-isobar intermediate states is used in the analysis of e −d elastic and inclusive inelastic scattering. The charge, quadrupole and magnetic deuteron form factors are evaluated in the impulse approximation with nucleon-nucleon and ΔΔ components of the deuteron wave function. The meson exchange current contributions to the deuteron form factors are also calculated. The elastic scattering longitudinal, A( q), and transverse, B( q), form factors, and induced deuteron tensor polarization, t 20( q),are compared with experimental data. The competition between contributions from isobar and meson exchange currents at high momentum transfer is discussed. Inclusive inelastic, scattering d(e, e′), at high energies is discussed in the context of the possibility of obtaining information on large momentum components of the deuteron wavefunction.
