Abstract
Every textbook of gynecology and many textbooks of medicine have devoted at least one chapter to painful menses, or dysmenorrhea. The loss of woman-hours because of dysmenorrhea, with its social and economic consequences, easily exceeds that of any other disease entity. On Sept 26-27, 1980, in Chicago, a conference was held on dysmenorrhea. Dr Yusoff Dawood has assembled the more important aspects of this conference and has edited an excellent text on the subject. This book presents a comprehensive review of dysmenorrhea, not only for the gynecologist, but for most physicians, especially the family practitioner. The basic anatomy and embryology of the female reproductive organs are presented, followed by chapters on hormones and prostaglandins. The physiology of the normal menstrual cycle and uterine activity is presented. The psychiatric and surgical approach is reviewed. It was a surprise to see pictures of presacral neurectomy from 1941.
