Abstract

Although research has identified a number of behaviors that can foster or hinder the expression of intimacy in relationships, the specific identification of dysfunctional beliefs about the nature and development of intimacy has been neglected in the literature. Based on clinical observations, this article presents eight such beliefs that may hinder the development of intimacy and become the target of cognitive therapy intervention strategies for appropriate revision. An example of the process of assessing dysfunctional beliefs about intimacy in the marital context is presented.
