Abstract

This chapter examines the available histories of the Malla dynasty of Bishnupur, in the Bankura district of West Bengal, and tries to figure out the features of ‘local history’ in them. Through the analysis of the local legends of Bishnupur, it elaborates the idea of ‘dynastic time,’ a special variant of time that contains cycles of the rise and fall of the respective dynasties. The chapter separates ‘local histories’ from the recognised academic histories and shows that the local histories in India are still widely the carriers of myths, memories and legends. The local histories thus differ from academic histories on the nature of truth claims. Dynastic time merges with mythical and divine time.
