Abstract

The paper investigates the reflection and transmission of ultra-short pulses propagating through linear and nonlinear narrowband fibre Bragg gratings, FBGs. The pulse-grating interaction is being exploited today in many applications requiring pulse shaping and pulse slicing including those in multi-wavelength communications. The time domain transmission line modelling, TLM, method is used to study the temporal pulse-grating interaction. This interaction is examined for different pulse widths. The nonlinearity present in optical materials assumes importance when the power levels become significant, for example in communication systems employing multiple, high bit-rate channels such as in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and optical time division multiplexing (OTDM). The results of this study suggest that the effect of grating nonlinearity on pulse propagation should be duly investigated in order to assess the system performance
