Abstract
The relations of the dural sac to the spinal canal are variable and they can change in two ways. In the cervical spine stretching and relaxing of the dural walls in anteflexion and retroflexion of the spine often causes changes in the width of the dorsal and ventral epidural spaces. A ventral shift of the dorsal dural wall in maximal anteflexion can obliterate the posterior subarachnoidal space, so that it cannot fill with air. On the other hand, in the lower lumbar spine variations in the width of the anterior epidural space as a result of changes in intradural pressure can be shown. This phenomenon can be used for the diagnosis of increased tension of the dural wall owing to disc protrusions and herniations.
