Abstract

The determination of skin blood flow provides essential information in diseases with impaired blood flow. Since the skin of these patients is very sensitive and may easily be injured, a real non contact method to measure blood flow is advantageous. Light of the wavelength 632.8 nm (He-Ne-laser) has a mean penetration depth of 0.4 mm in human skin and it can therefore be scattered by the red blood cells in the micro-vessels near the skin surface. Several attempts have been made to utilize laser light for skin blood flow determination. Most of these devices use optical fibres for laser light illumination and the detection of the scattered light. As these fibres must be attached to the skin by a special probe, no real non contact measurement is possible (laser Doppler method, [1]). Especially the detachment of the probe from the skin bears the risk of injuring the sensitive skin.
