Abstract

The dynamics of a single sonoluminescing bubble in dense aqueous NaCl and KCl solutions is studied using a high-speed framing camera. Although the bubble became unstable, the luminescence intensity increased for larger driving pressures and higher concentrations. In this state, the bubble was found to split into a main sonoluminescing one and a number of daughter ones. Such unstable behavior is usually regarded as characteristic of the bubble dynamics near the lower sonoluminescience threshold of acoustic pressure, but the present finding suggests that, for dense aqueous solutions, there exists still another regime where the bubble is unstable and yet has more luminosity.
