Abstract

The synthesis and accumulation of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), induced by 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) in HeLa, A549 and 3T3 cells was studied using confocal fluorescence microscopy. The accumulation dynamics of PpIX in cells was determined from the kinetics of its fluorescence intensity. The PpIX synthesis rate was analyzed as function of 5-ALA concentration in the culture medium and incubation time.
