Abstract

The X-band spin- $\frac{1}{2}$ photoluminescence-detected magnetic resonance of poly(para-phenylene)-type ladder polymer films and solutions are described. The photoluminescence-enhancing resonances are assigned to enhanced nonradiative recombination of long-lived polaron pairs, which are singlet exciton quenching centers. Their behavior is consistent with two distinct polaron lifetimes or a very broad distribution of lifetimes; in solutions they are $\ensuremath{\approx}10$ longer than in films. Distinct lifetimes are discussed in relation to longer-lived intrachain interconjugation segment and shorter-lived interchain pairs.
