Abstract

The 245 keV (5/2+) state in 111Cd has been used as a probe to study the lattice instability at the V site in the superconducting compound HfV2. The temperature dependence of the electric quadrupole interaction frequency omega 0 has been understood by assuming the presence of soft-phonon modes, the gamma -recoil effects and a small (about 1%) increase (decrease) in the charge at the V (Hf) site above the lattice transformation temperature TL approximately=120 K. A high-temperature phase transition has also been observed in HfV2 at T approximately=520 K.
