Abstract

The dynamics of free liquid films is studied from an electrohydrodynamic point of view for the case where stability of the film is determined by the attractive van der Waals force and by the repulsive force arising from the overlap of diffuse electric double layers. There are two modes, a squeezing mode and a stretching mode, and the dispersion equations for these modes are obtained. The long wavelength limit is studied in detail and is related to results obtained from the thermodynamic theory of fluctuations.
