Abstract

This paper is intended as an overview of the current status of research on the dynamics of dilute polymer solutions, aimed primarily at the “nonspecialist” who is interested in understanding the origins of drag reduction, and other macroscopically observable effects produced by very small quantities of a high molecular weight polymer in a Newtonian fluid. We do this by attempting to address two fundamental questions: 1. What does a polymer molecule do when a dilute solution is subjected to a flow? (and how does it depend on the flow?) 2. What is the effect of the polymer on the flow? (and how is it correlated with any changes of conformation that the polymer may undergo?)
