Abstract

Figure 8.1 shows the dynamics of a host—parasitoid interaction system that Utida (1956, 1957a, b) experimentally produced in the laboratory, using the azuki bean weevil, Callosobruchus chinensis (L.), as host and the braconid wasp, Heterospilus prosopidis (Viereck), as parasitoid. The graphs are routinely cited in ecology text books as a typical example of a host—parasitoid oscillation. In this chapter, I shall delve into the causal mechanism underlying the dynamics of this classic experimental system.
