Abstract

In the past few years there have been several attempts to unerstand the decay of 29 an cm−1 phonons resonantly trapped in the E→2A excited state resonance of the Cr3+ ions in ruby. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the decay of the resonant phonons including spectral1–3 and spatial diffusion, 3,4 and anharmonic decay.3 We suggest here another process, resonant phonon assisted energy transfer, which we feel is active under conditions of strong resonant scattering in ruby. It is probable that all of these mechanisms are important under certain conditions.
