Abstract

A novel programmable metasurface (PMs) based on substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) is proposed and analyzed in this paper. Without the need for mechanical gimbals and phase shifters, the proposed PMs can synthesize high gain steerable directive beams and complex, multi-beams by converting the guided wave to free space by means of a binary modulation scheme. Discrete dipole approximation (DDA) is used to calculate far-field radiation patterns of the PMs under different coding sequences, excellent agreement between the DDA method and the full-wave simulation is obtained, which verify the accuracy and efficiency of this method. Combing with the DDA method, the proposed SIW PMs has a potential value in SAR imaging, dynamic beamforming, or security inspection applications.
