Abstract
Surface phonon dispersion curves have been measured for both high-symmetry directions of the W(001)/H(1 × 1) surface by He atom inelastic scattering. In addition to the Rayleigh mode an intense inelastic peak from a longitudinal surface mode was observed. The measured phonon dispersion curves are shown to be in good agreement with lattice dynamical calculations in which the bulk force constants up to second-nearest neighbors and force constants describing the interaction of the H atoms, both with surface atoms and among each other, are included. Thus on hydrogen adsorption a restoration of surface force constants to bulk values takes place, quite similar to what has been observed for Pt(111) and Si(111).
